When walleye are hungry, every bite is pronounced, and hooksets are sure. What separates anglers are those fish sitting in a current seam, already full of baitfish that have washed by yet make the mistake of striking a jig worked with the perfect cadence. The line only twitched an inch to the left, they weren’t hungry, but you sensed their presence and swung hard. Or, they’ll position in front of a rock pile scattered with stalks of weed, and as the crankbait tears free, the walleye has no choice but to ambush a fleeing prey. Drifting a jig or a tail-hooked minnow beneath a bobber will suffice for those fish suspended atop the structure.
