Fenwick HMX Salmon/Steelhead Mooching is rated out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Fishest from HMX Mooching Rod 10'6'' Very nice quality rod...I've put an MR3 Islander Reel on it and enjoy it's performance. I would prefer that the reel seat be higher though to improve the leverage.I really liked the BLACKHAWK GRAPHITE BSH105AC which had the sliding seat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by D_Rock from Salmon Masters 2013 As a fishing guide on the west side of haida gwaii at popular fishing resorts, my boat was able to win six consecutive 1st place salmon fishing tournaments over the course of four years totaling more than $200,000 in winnings. I first started with the original HMX then moved to the Elite Tech 10'6" which had a very similar handle and butt section to this rod (no cheap ugly plastic butt cap). The new Fuji reel seat on this latest HMX is a welcome addition. Only draw back is this rod could be built stronger, but knowing that it's a light rod and keeping your clients in check while fishing can help getting them to last longer. I'll go through 5 or 6 of these rods in 100 days of fishing but at this price point that's ok. The composite cork handle and butt, and reel seat make this rod aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to use. I am casting herring setting gear on downriggers free spool with MR2 reel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Thermocline from I bought this rod because i bought one last month and it broke right away and the warranty was way too complicated to get fixed and you said i may received another one but will take many months(after our professional fishing season). It seemed to me it was a mountain for you to get it fixed. All my gear was fenwick. I now started to buy ocuma cold water. It seems to me that even tho they don't give a lifetime warranty, they are more solid. Thanks Eric

Rated 1 out of 5 by Rodie from Butt too short!! I have a month-long surf fishing trip coming up and I needed a new spinning rod. I wanted Fenwick because they have always been good for me. I researched the 9' product line and picked the "mooching" rod. It had all the right parmeters: line weight, lure weight, rod power and rod action. I did not know what mooching meant but I did notice that the butt end (reel seat to butt end) was short. I still don't know what makes it a mooching rod, but the butt end is only 10 inches! That seems way too short to comfortably leverage a cast. It seems to me I have few options: (1) return the rod for credit (2) try it out and see if my fears of a 10" butt are warranted (3) if not satisfactory extend the butt 16" or tape the reel to the upper grip so it is comfortable to cast. As an aside, the line guides are the smallest I have ever seen on a spinning rod. I really don't think I should have to do option 3 on a brand new rod. I really don't know what to do.
