Rated 5 out of 5 by rockdog from PERFECT ROD The HMG Ice Spinning Rod is the first ice fishing rod I have ever bought. I got it because of the ergonomic handle and the rod had some "back bone" to it. Not the buggy whip most of the others were. No kidding, the first time I used it I caught a huge Northern. Could not have done it with a lesser rod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by skyelynne from What a fantastic little ice rod! I bought two of these rods to start ice fishing with my husband, and we both thought the rods were great. We used Shakespeare ice fishing reels, and we were able to feel even the smallest of nibbles from the perch we were fishing for in Lake St. Clair. Great responsiveness and suited our needs perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by chayes7 from extremely sensitive! I bought this rod last winter to use as my primary crappie rod. It has out performed every other rod I have tried and I have used quite a few. The tip is super sensitive and light bites are easily detected but it gives way to a solid backbone to land big fish. Overall a great product, would definitely buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Troy Cee from Sold on the Fenwick HMG series: BEST OVERALL VALUE I’m going to take a different route here and since Ice Fishing season just ended up here in Alberta, Canada, I’m going to give a review on the Fenwick HMG ice series rods. This was the first year I tried ice fishing full time. As a result, I bought several different rod/reel combos, in addition to rods and reels separately. Despite spending about 200 dollars trying to find the perfect fit, I still hadn’t found what I wanted in a combo until a friend recommended the HMG ice rods. I’d seen the Fenwick ice rod line before, but went with the St. Croixs’ when it came time to purchasing. I decided to try the 27” medium, moderate fast rod for a trip to Lesser Slave Lake, which is one of the premier lakes in Alberta. You never know what you’re going to get at that lake when you go fishing there. Sometimes it can be a 3lb Wally or a 15 lb pike. I paired the HMG with a new reel (Frabill drop shot) and right away, I KNEW I had the right fit. I really like the twist lock for my reel and no worries about it popping off, which happened with another high end Frabill rod I had (secured by fasteners only). The Fenwick felt great, perfect length and a perfect fit for the style of ice jigging that I like to try. I dropped a ¼ oz jig with a minnow to the bottom, which was about 45 feet deep and although the rod was a medium, it was sensitive enough that I felt the first hit right way. The fast action allowed me to set the hook instantly and then did the slow reel upwards making sure to keep the right bend so I didn't lose the fish. It was a thick 7 lb ling cod, which fight heavy at first, go lame during the ascent and then hard at the hole, which can cause them to spit the hook. It took almost 10 minutes to get that Ling thru the hole but the rod was perfect; perfect feel, perfect fit in my hand (it’s got a ergo design with soft foam handles), perfect length and it gave the perfect bend and no worries about my reel popping off. Didn't have to worry about it spitting the hook and the medium strength handled the fish easily. I Landed that ling no problem and voila, HMG series is my ice rod of choice. I caught a smaller ling and Walleye on that same trip. Next weekend, I tried it out on some smaller Rainbow trout (1-3 pounds) and again, even though it was a medium, I could still feel the hits right away. Landed every trout on that rod, including some less than a pound, which was surprising for a medium rod. After that, I sold all my other rods and the best thing about it all? My store put the Fenwick HMG's on sale 2 weeks later; I picked up an ultra light and a light HMG for perch and rainbow trout. And I got to say, the rods were ALREADY a great value to begin with, better value than the St. Croix, and a way better value overall than anything else I tried. Great for the everyday fisherman. Looking forward to getting a regular HMG light series for trout fishing for the middle of next month. I’m betting the summer HMG series is just as good as the winter! Cabela's has a Fenwick HMG combo, with a Fenwick reel that I'm for sure going to try next year (if my wife lets me buy another one, lol). Thanks!! ps..I can't say enough about the value of these rods!
